Subspecies, varieties, forms and cultivars of plants belonging to the Oreocereus hempelianus group

  • Arequipa spinosissima F.Ritter: has more numerous spines (up to 10 centrals and up to 30 radials). Distribution: Arequipa, Ayacucho, Peru.
  • Oreocereus hempelianus (Gürke) D.R.Hunt: is a short cylindrical cactus with dense short brown spines and bright purple/red flowers when mature. Distribution: Peru (Arequipa, Moquegua and Tacna) and Chile (Arica y Parinacota and Tarapacá)
  • Oreocereus rettigii (Quehl) Buxb.: it is covered with many coloured spines and has tubular red flowers with oblique edges and spiny bases. It is quite variable and appear to fall within the natural variation of O. hempelianus. Distribution: (Arequipa, Peru and north Chile.
