is a great plant, with unusually golden flowers that stay open day and night. This cactus is still often encountered under the name of Borzicactus aureiflorus.

Subspecies, varieties, forms and cultivars of plants belonging to the Matucana aureiflora group

  • Matucana aureiflora F.Ritter: has yellowish to amber coloured spines with brown bases which are curved inward and pectinated. Flowers Yellow to golden. Distribution: Peru (Camajarca)
  • Matucana aureiflora var. elata hort., Kníže: has longer spines. Distribution: Cajamarquilla, Cajamarca, Peru.
  • Matucana celendinensis F.Ritter: has orange coloured flower, thinner, longer and less pectinated spines. Sometime referred to Matucana paucicostata but more similar to Matucana aurantiaca. Distribution: Balsas 4, Amazonas, Peru.
